Verb Tenses in Academic Writing

Present Simple: Used for actions that are regular, habitual, or facts.

Example: “She reads books every day.”

Present Continuous: Used for actions happening right now or around the present moment.

Example: “They are playing soccer.”

Present Perfect: Used for actions that happened in the past but have relevance to the present.

Example: “I have visited Paris.”

Past Simple: Used for actions that happened and were completed in the past.

Example: “He watched a movie yesterday.”

Past Continuous: Used for actions that were ongoing in the past.

Example: “She was studying when the phone rang.”

Past Perfect: Used to show an action that happened before another action in the past.

Example: “They had already eaten when I arrived.”

Future Simple: Used for actions that will happen in the future.

Example: “I will meet you tomorrow.”

Future Continuous: Used for actions that will be ongoing at a specific future time.

Example: “They will be traveling this time next week.”

Future Perfect: Used to show an action that will be completed before a specific future time.

Example: “She will have finished her project by Friday.”
